“Carmilla” is a classic work of Gothic literature and one of the earliest examples of vampire fiction. The story is narrated by Laura, a young woman living in a secluded castle in Styria (present-day Austria). Her peaceful life is disrupted when a mysterious woman named Carmilla arrives, claiming to be a distant relative. As Carmilla becomes a close friend to Laura, strange and unsettling events begin to occur, leading Laura to suspect that Carmilla is not who she appears to be. The novella delves into themes of predation, the supernatural, and the tension between innocence and corruption, all while exploring the eerie and unsettling atmosphere typical of Gothic fiction.
